Episodic VFX

Built for the Episode Cycle.

A series is not one long film. Shots arrive in waves, episodes lock at different times, and the same set, actor or effect has to look identical in episode one and episode eight.

We work as an extension of your VFX team: taking each turnover as it lands, keeping recurring shots consistent, and delivering versions your editorial and finishing teams can track without chasing.

The Challenges

Where Series VFX Gets Hard.

Episodic schedules multiply the usual VFX problems by the number of episodes.

  • 01

    Volume in waves

Turnovers arrive per episode, often overlapping, while earlier episodes are still in review.

  • 02

    Consistency across episodes

Recurring sets, screens, wounds and environments must match from one episode to the next, even months apart.

  • 03

    Platform requirements

Streaming platforms publish their own delivery and security requirements, and every vendor in the chain has to meet them.

  • 04

    Version control

With many shots in flight, a wrong version in a conform costs time that a series schedule doesn’t have.

How We Help

One Team Across the Season.

Recurring shot types are handled the same way every time, so the look holds across the season.

At the start of a series we agree how recurring elements are treated — edge softness on a recurring matte, how a recurring cleanup is approached, how a screen insert sits in the frame. Those decisions carry into every later episode. We plan the team around your episode schedule as turnovers are confirmed.

Episodic work we support
How It Works

Turnover to Delivery, Episode by Episode.

The same five stages as every RotoEdge project, run per episode.

Working from India on IST, our artists can often progress shots while a team in the Americas or Europe is offline, which can help keep a tight episode schedule moving. Clear plate preparation helps every turnover — see preparing plates for a VFX vendor.

What to share at series start

The episode count and expected turnover dates, your delivery specification, your naming and versioning conventions, the platform’s vendor security requirements, and reference for any recurring elements. Agreeing these once saves time on every episode that follows.

Recurring shot types are where a series vendor earns its keep. The tenth set-extension matte on a recurring location should match the first, and a screen insert in a late episode should sit exactly as it did in the pilot. We keep the approved treatments as a reference for every artist on the show, so new team members work to the same look from day one.

What to Expect

Working With RotoEdge.

  • We follow your spec

Platforms publish their own delivery requirements. Send us the specification for your show and we deliver to it.

  • Security by agreement

NDAs before footage is shared, secure workflows and access limited to assigned artists. We review your platform’s requirements during scoping — see security.

AI-assisted tools may speed up repetitive steps; quality control and final approvals stay with our artists.

FAQ

Streaming Series Questions.

Can you handle turnovers for several episodes at once?

Yes. We scope each turnover as it arrives and plan the team around your episode schedule. Tell us the expected volume and dates during scoping so we can plan ahead.

How do you keep the look consistent across episodes?

Treatments for recurring elements are agreed early and reused on every later episode, and QC checks new shots against those already approved.

Do you meet streaming platform delivery specs?

Each platform publishes its own requirements. We follow the specification you send us for your show and check shots against it before delivery.

Are you TPN certified?

No, RotoEdge does not currently claim TPN or other certification. TPN is needed only where a production mandates it. We review your platform’s security requirements during scoping and tell you early if they need something we don’t hold.

How do you avoid version mix-ups?

We adopt your naming and versioning conventions at the start of the series and deliver every version labelled to them.
