Independent Film

Invisible Fixes. Honest Scoping.

Most independent films don’t need spectacle. They need a boom pole gone, a modern sign removed, a sky replaced or a green screen made to work — and they need it without surprises on the invoice.

RotoEdge works with producers and directors who are often managing VFX for the first time. We help you decide which shots really need work, scope each one individually and deliver to the standard your festival or distributor expects.

The Challenges

What Independent Producers Tell Us.

The same four problems come up on almost every independent project we scope.

  • 01

    VFX planned too late

Shots were not flagged on set, so problems surface in the edit when fixes cost more and options are fewer.

  • 02

    A fixed, tight budget

There is no contingency. A shot list that grows mid-post can push the whole finish off schedule.

  • 03

    No VFX supervisor

Many independent films run without a dedicated VFX producer, so the director or producer briefs the vendor directly.

  • 04

    Delivery requirements

Festivals and distributors set technical requirements, and a shot that fails QC can hold up the whole delivery.

How We Help

Spend Where It Shows.

We start with your cut and your budget, then work out the most efficient way to fix each shot.

Often that means mixing disciplines: a little roto and paint can solve a shot that looked like it needed a full composite. We price each shot on its own, so you can see where the money goes and decide what to keep, simplify or cut.

How It Works

From Rough Cut to Final Delivery.

Our five-stage process, adapted for a small team with a fixed budget.

Can you bring us in before the shoot? Even better. A short conversation about how a shot will be filmed can save the cost of fixing it later. Our guide to preparing plates for a VFX vendor covers what to send.

For a first-time VFX producer

You don’t need VFX vocabulary to brief us. A timecode, a screenshot and a sentence like “remove the van behind her” is enough to start. We’ll translate the note into a scope, tell you what the shot needs and explain any trade-offs before you approve. Our VFX glossary covers the terms you’ll hear.

The biggest cost driver on an independent film is usually change after work has started: an edit that moves, a shot that gets longer, a note that arrives after approval. Locking VFX shots in the edit before we begin, and approving in stages, keeps the budget where you set it.

AI-assisted tools may help with repetitive steps, but creative decisions and final approvals stay with our artists.

FAQ

Independent Film Questions.

Do you work with low-budget independent films?

Yes. We scope every project individually, so a handful of cleanup shots is as workable as a larger VFX list. Prices depend on the shots — see what affects VFX outsourcing pricing.

How do we keep VFX costs under control?

Get us involved early, lock the edit on VFX shots before work starts, and approve shots in priority order. Because each shot is priced separately, you can trim the list without renegotiating everything.

We don’t have a VFX supervisor. Is that a problem?

No. Many independent productions don’t. We’ll walk you through what we need, explain options in plain terms and give clear notes on each shot.

Can you help us meet festival or distributor delivery requirements?

Send us the delivery specification you have been given. We check our shots against it before delivery so they slot into your final master.

Why outsource to a studio in India?

Many productions do it for cost and for overnight progress across time zones. Our guide to outsourcing VFX to India covers the practical questions.
